Day 5

$10,414!!! Can't believe I have hit the 10k mark. Thank you so much everyone.

The school week has come to an end and I'm looking forward to my next milestone of this challenge - the weekend.

I had a feeling I was never going to make it through the week without having to walk in the rain - so close but not quite. Sure enough just before I was about to get off the bus it started chucking it down. Despite waiting 20 minutes sheltering in the petrol station, it continued to pour so off I went.

Feet soaked, stomach grumbling, ankles aching, I quickly talked myself out of the Friday Fitness session I was originally heading into work early for.  I've been indecisive the entire week as to whether I should even have the opportunity to do it this week - an air-conditioned sports hall isn't exactly a common feature of refugee type living. I opted out. I am tired and today I feel like the hAngriness has really kicked in.

One of today's highlights for the kids (and would have been for me!!) at school was the Bake Off competition and bake sale at lunch. Not buying something (where the money would go to charity) - so that I could raise money for charity? How does this work ethically?!

I had a full on day and felt pretty done by the end of it.  Today I really felt my concentration suffer.  I toyed with catching an after school activities bus that was going to Wan Chai Gap and then walking home but couldn't decide whether it was cheating or not.  So, I followed my usual route .... today with stunning views.

En route home I stopped by Park n Shop to have a quick look if there was anything I might want to spend a portion of my last $28.20 on - bearing in mine I have budgeted enough food for my weekend meals. What would you buy?

The amount happiness this salad brought - was a little weird. But anything goes.  Fresh (well now reduced, not-so fresh) vegetables, seeds, dried fruit AND a dressing full of sugar - a regular personal favourite I quickly sacked off the fried rice I had planned to make and splashed out.  Friday night salads, that's where its at. Totally content. But still hungry, rice and eggs to follow.

It's finally the weekend, and I'm feeling pretty smug that its 6:30pm and I am almost finished my blog for the day.  Although I do still feel like I have that "countdown" thing going on in my head because this week its more of a countdown to Monday rather than Friday.

A weekend free with no commitments.  A junk was originally on the cards but blows the budget just marginally so that one is a no go. A Sunday hike starting at the Peak had to also be declined because I can't afford to get to the start point - and I don't fancy a pre-hike. A Friday night event - dinner and drinks, again - even though the costs were covered - a no go.

My budget friendly options for this weekend:

Seeing friends and family - a friend round tonight and my parents tomorrow morning.  They will be having cups of tea and coffee from Danny's stash.. not mine!!! And I may go for a wonder around IKEA with the parents.  Without a doubt it will be the first time I EVER exit IKEA without one of those blue bags full of unnecessary household items. Maybe I'll even just take my lunch and hang out on the couches in there with the other half of Hong Kong.  Some people take the saying try before you buy way too literally.

Super Saturday at Kings Park - an opportunity to watch all the premiership teams play rugby and normally a good afternoon out.  Regular route - bus straight through the tunnel? Taxi perhaps? This week... a walk to Wan Chai Star Ferry, $2.70 star ferry ride (what happened to when it was $2?), and a half hour walk up to Kings Park. Repeat for the journey home.

Another option - to watch the women's rugby match between Valley and Tigers at Happy Valley at 6pm. Transport - 10 minute walk. Free.

Being productive - I do intend to stay at home and take advantage of the time to do some life admin, maybe some work, maybe finally start that nutrition course I signed up to before the summer...and lets be honest, one thing I will most definitely do is dream about what I am going to eat on Monday. It's just 8 cups of tea away...

A walk/hike or run - Possibly on Sunday a hike that is accessible by foot to the starting point and back from the finish point. Without being a hike in itself.

Have a fabulous weekend.

Day 1

The first thing people ask.....  What will you eat!? The first thing I thought... What will I eat!? Today I can honestly say I have enjoyed my food. A lot simpler but also quicker, here is the run down: Breakfast: Peanut butter and cold porridge  Snack: Scrambled egg sandwich  Lunch: Beef and shiitake congee and half an apple Dinner: Mixed vegetable fried rice Desert: Frozen banana and peanut butter for desert And tea .  Cannot forget the tea.. the Chinese in me loves a congee, but the Brit in me cannot live without the tea. I am however limited with just one box of teabags and one litre of milk. I never thought I'd see the day where I had to count my teabags and measure how much milk went into my tea. 30ml incase you are wondering. 2 TBS. A dash. JUST enough.  That's all for today - more tomorrow on my refugee journey!!

Day 6

Weekends are always over too quickly.  One good thing about having next to no money? Time goes very slowly... your weekend feels longer!! Up at 6:15am I thought about how to fill my day.  After some life admin, the rain had stopped and the cabin fever was already building by 9am, I went for a run and my parents came over shortly after.  Budget bread for me,  mum's home made bread for everyone else. Much of the morning was spent reading and sharing the SCMP article that was published about what I have been doing this week (link here ).  As expected, there are a few comments from some sad readers who obviously have no better purpose in life than to pick apart the good people are trying to do and criticise.  It makes my blood boil that people can be so ignorant and cold hearted, but in comparison to the positivity I have received, it's nothing. My biggest issue is that these pessimistic readers have completely missed the point of what I am doing.  ...
